How to Become a CPA in Colorado

Education Requirements:

Education to sit for CPA Exam: 150 semester hours, including 33 semester hours in accounting classes, and 27 semester hours in business at an undergraduate or graduate level.

Degree Requirement: Baccalaureate degree

You will be able to sit for the exam if you meet any of the following:

  • You are enrolled in a program where you receive a bachelor’s degree upon completion of a combined degree program (Dual Degree).
  • Your program requires 150 semester hours for graduation.
  • Your program does not offer a bachelor’s degree but instead confers a master’s or higher degree.

Candidates Must Obtain: 27 semester hours in upper-division accounting classes. 6 semester hours must be in auditing of which 3 hours must cover Generally Accepted Auditing Standards (GAAS). 3 separate hours of accounting ethics is also required and 21 semester hours in general business.

License Requirement:

Pass AICPA Ethics Exam: Must pass AICPA Professional Ethics Exam and provide 5 separate letters of recommendation.

International Program Participant: Yes

Work Experience: 1 year (1,800 hours) for one or more employers as an employee of a CPA

Audit Related Requirements: In order to sign audit reports, valid experience will need to include 500 hours of attestation services.

Ethics Exam: Must pass AICPA Professional Ethics Exam within 90 days of fulfilling work experience requirement.
